Privacy
LocalTeX compiles your documents on your own device. Your projects are never uploaded, there is no account, and LocalTeX sets no cookies and uses no third-party analytics or ads.
What stays on your device
- Your projects: every file, folder and project setting, in the browser's storage for my.localtex.app.
- The TeX engine and TeX Live files, cached after the first download so later visits work offline.
- Your preferences, such as theme, editor font and whether to share usage counts.
Deleting a project in the dashboard removes it. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes everything above.
What reaches the LocalTeX server
-
Requests for TeX Live files. When a document uses a package that isn't downloaded yet, the
browser asks for it by file name, for example
algorithm2e.sty. Nothing from your document is sent. - Anonymous usage counts, unless you turn them off in Settings, Advanced. Each browser tab sends one small report when you switch away from it or close it: whether the editor was opened, and for each kind of compile, the compiler, the TeX Live size, the result and the total time. The server adds the country the request came from. There are no identifiers, so counts can't be linked to you or to each other. Browsers that send Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track never send them.
- Feedback you send from the editor: the kind (bug, idea or other), your message, and your email address only if you add it. Your IP address is used only to limit how many messages can be sent per minute, and isn't stored with the message.
- The dashboard's news and templates, fetched without anything about you or your projects.
Hosting
LocalTeX runs on Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare sees your IP address in order to answer requests, and keeps short-lived logs of requests to the engine and the API. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
Checking for yourself
LocalTeX is open source, so every request above can be read in the source code, or watched in your browser's network tools.
