LocalTeX Open the editor

A editor that runs on your computer, not ours

LocalTeX puts TeX Live 2026 in your browser. Pick a template and start writing: no account, no compile timeouts, nothing to install. Your projects are saved on this device and keep working offline.

Free and open source. The first compile downloads TeX Live once, about 130 MB.

The LocalTeX editor: LaTeX source on the left, the compiled PDF on the right, and the status Compiled in 3.0 s.

Open it and start writing

There is nothing to install and no account to make.

  1. Pick a template. Article, IEEE paper, thesis, report or a blank page. It opens in the editor right away.
  2. LocalTeX sets itself up. While you write, TeX Live downloads once in the corner of the screen: about 130 MB, a few minutes on most connections.
  3. Compile on your device. Ctrl+S builds the PDF in seconds, offline too. Errors come with a plain explanation and a fix to try.

Your documents never leave this device

Compiling happens in your browser, so there is nothing to upload. The LocalTeX server only hands out TeX Live, one file at a time.

How LocalTeX handles data

Projects
Saved in this browser's storage. Download a zip to back one up or move it to another computer.
Compiling
Runs on your own processor, so a long thesis gets all the time it needs.
Packages
Fetched by file name the first time a document uses them, like algorithm2e.sty. Only the name is sent.
Usage counts
Anonymous totals of opens and compiles. Turn them off in Settings; browsers that send Global Privacy Control are never counted.

Good to know first

Running on your device has a few trade-offs.

  • Projects live in one browser. There is no sync or real-time collaboration; share a project as a zip.
  • Clearing this site's data in your browser deletes its projects. Keep a zip of anything important.
  • Shell-escape (minted), LuaLaTeX and SVG figures are not supported yet. See what compiles
